As students prepare to return to school, many are starting the year with greater confidence after participating in elementary summer school programs offered by York Region District School Board.
Elementary summer school provides students with an opportunity to strengthen their literacy and mathematics skills, helping them feel prepared for the year ahead. For students transitioning to high school, summer school can also ease the transition by helping them build confidence, make new friends and become familiar with a secondary school environment.
Summer school also offers tailored support for Multilingual Language Learners, giving students dedicated space to practice oral communication and build confidence for the fall.
“My favourite thing about summer school is the teachers,” said Jonathan, a student entering Grade 9 this year. “They really help you build skills to succeed in high school. They’re very supporting, and they understand your struggles and where you want to improve.”
Beyond academics, students also enjoyed opportunities to connect with peers and explore a variety of interests through elective activities, including sports, games, robotics and art.
“I like that you get to meet new people from different schools,” said Mikala, a student entering Grade 8. “Because that also helps prepare you for when you go to high school because you’ll already know some of the people that you met at summer school.”
Elementary summer school is one of many summer learning opportunities offered through York Region District School Board to support student achievement and well-being.
