The York Region District School Board is committed to creating, sustaining and fostering caring, inclusive, safe and trauma-informed school learning environments which promote student achievement, positive relationships and human rights. Each student has the right to learn in a safe, positive, respectful, and identity-affirming inclusive environment free from harassment and discrimination.
YRDSB’s approach to making schools caring, safe and inclusive involves the whole school community, which focuses on:
- promoting positive student behaviour through a code of conduct for everyone
- building healthy and respectful relationships throughout the whole school community
- preventing inappropriate behaviour through initiatives like community circles and restorative practices, caring and safe schools presentations, bullying prevention programs, etc.
- partnering with families and community partners
- addressing inappropriate behaviour through bias-aware and trauma-informed progressive discipline
The Code of Conduct applies to all members of the school community including students, parents or guardians, school bus drivers, volunteers, school staff and community groups, whether they are on York Region School Board property, in a virtual learning environment, on school buses, at school-authorized events or activities, in before-and after-school programs including co-curricular activities and field trips and may be applied to any other circumstances connected to the school that may have an impact on the school climate.
