School Registration

Thank you for choosing YRDSB and welcome. Registering for school takes a few easy steps.

If any of the following apply, please visit the Reception Centre

  • Students with time-sensitive documents (e.g., Dependent on parent’s work permits, parent’s study permits, refugee status, convention refugee, diplomatic status)
  • Students with Permanent Resident Status if they are new to Ontario and without an Ontario report card
  • Students with Permanent Resident Status if they have been out of Canada for more than 1 year
  • Students with Permanent Resident Status who have been homeschooled for more than 1 year
  • International Visa Students (elementary only)
  • Children under 18 years of age living with a custodian in York Region
Kindergarten Registration
Starting Kindergarten is an exciting time. Learn more about our Kindergarten program and how to register your child.

Use the school locator to identify YRDSB schools for your address.  Any requests for transfer will be arranged through your home school.  

You can find your school's contact information on the school profiles or on your school's website.

Elementary schools are closed during July and August.  Please contact the Community Education Centre in your area to set up your registration appointment.

Proof of Student's Name and Date of Birth:

  • Student's Birth Certificate/Statement of Live Birth

  • Passport

Proof of Residency:

Proof of your child’s address - Three Documents Required:

  • One (1) from Category A, and Two (2) from Category B

  • All documents must show home address for student living with the parent(s)/guardians(s)

  • All documents must contain at least one parent or guardian’s name

  • All Category A documents must be original.  Copies will not be accepted

Category A:

  • Property tax Bill/MPAC notice of tax assessment (must be current - within past year)
  • Purchase and sale agreement, including proof of purchase and closing date, provided before the student attends the school (must be current - within past year)
  • Bank Statement/Financial letter: must be stamped by Financial Institution – financial details can be obscured (must be current – within two months)
  • Any CRA document (must be current – within past year)
    • For example: Notice of Assessment, Canada Child Benefit, Goods and Services tax/Harmonized sales tax (GST/HST credit), Housing Benefits, etc.

Category B:

  • Utility Bill/e-Bill (must be current – within two months)
    • For example: hydro, gas, water, residential phone/cable/internet Bill, insurance policy – home, tenant or auto
  • Any CRA document, IF NOT USED FOR CATEGORY A. (must be current – within past year)  
    • For example: Notice of Assessment, Canada Child Benefit, Goods and Services tax/Harmonized sales tax (GST/HST credit), Housing Benefits, etc. 
  • Other official Provincial or Federal government documents that includes parent(s) or guardian(s) names and address (must be current – within past year).

Documents not acceptable in Category A or B:

  • Driver’s License;
  • Health Card;
  • Lease or Rental Agreements
  • Credit Card Statement; or
  • Cell Phone Bill/e-Bill

Your home school will help to identify and explain any special programs available to your child.

Considerat​ions:  

  • Do you identify as First Nation, Métis or Inuit? Students/families can identify their Indigenous ancestry and access opportunities and supports. Learn more about self-identification.

  • Kindergarten Registration begins in January, appointments to register are not necessary.  

  • For information about international students contact our International Education department.

  • While a new school is being built, registrations will take place at the designated holding school. Please visit our New Schools on our website for more information. 

  • Elementary schools are closed during July and August.  Please contact the Community Education Centre in your area to set up your registration appointment.

  • Visit Programs and Services to register for any credit and non-credit programs offered for adults, or elementary and secondary students.
