Thornhill, ON – On Saturday, April 7, 2018, 31 schools and 111 York Region District School Board students participated in the York Region Science and Technology Fair. Hosted at Stephen Lewis S.S., the fair was open to students across York Region from Grades 7-12.
“We are very pleased to see our students perform so well at the annual York Region Science and Technology Fair. Their success is a testament to all the hard work performed throughout our schools year-round by our students and dedicated staff,” said Heather Sears, Superintendent of Education, Curriculum and Instructional Services. Through their participation in this event YRDSB students are provided with an opportunity to engage in deep learning, be creative problem solvers and make connections beyond the classroom by considering local and global issues.
YRDSB students entered 73 projects and won the following awards:

7 Honourable Mentions
13 Bronze Medals
15 Silver Medals
6 Gold Medals
The top senior project was awarded to Austin Wu from Richmond Hill H.S. with A Novel Approach to Combat Cancer by Altering Levels of Sphingomyelin in the Cellular Membrane. A list of all 2018 award winners can be found here.
YRDSB will be sending 6 students to the Canada-Wide Science Fair from May 16-18 in Ottawa and leading up to the Canada-Wide Science Fair the finalists will be mentored by Innovation York.
