Over 100 educators from across York Region District School Board came together during two separate events to discuss opportunities to advance the achievement and well-being of students of African/Caribbean Heritage and of Korean Canadian students.
The Network for Educators for Korean Students launch held on Tuesday, October 3, brought together Korean educators, Korean community partners and their allies. At the launch, Superintendent of Education, Student Achievement and School Operations, Camille Logan spoke about equity, inclusivity and human rights.
Throughout the school year, the network also holds networking opportunities, provides support and resources for educators, and organizes workshops for educators and families.
The Alliance of Educators for Black Students held a launch event on Wednesday, October 4 that featured keynote speaker Dr. Carl James, Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora at York University, and Dr. Sandra Schecter, Professor of Education and Linguistics at York University. They shared achievement data, highlighted some of the barriers Black students face in classrooms and discussed strategies to support student achievement.
For almost 20 years, the alliance has been bringing together YRDSB educators and organizing events such as annual student awards, mentoring, forums and conferences for students and families, teacher workshops and more. Follow the work of the alliance at @AEBSYRDSB.
“Our students bring their social identities into the classrooms, and it’s important that we recognize that and provide opportunities for all of our students to reach their full potential, said Cecil Roach, Coordinating Superintendent of Education, Equity and Community Services. “These events and networks are about bringing people together to create those opportunities for our students.”
Both groups are among a number of staff networks that exist across the school board focused on recognizing student identities and supporting achievement and well-being.
York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 123,000 students in 176 elementary schools and 32 secondary schools. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing and the Board is one of the top achievers in Ontario.
