November is CPR Awareness Month, which is a good reminder to undertake or renew CPR training.
Sudden cardiac arrest can affect anyone – including students, staff or community members who appear healthy. It is one of the leading causes of death in North America. This is why York Region District School Board has installed Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in all of schools and workplaces.
The units were generously provided through a grant from the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
As part of the installation of the AEDs, YRDSB also trained over 2,000 staff members, students, parents, community members and permit holders in both CPR and AED use.
The three-hour training included:
- Adult, child and infant CPR
- Relief of choking
- AED use
- Signs and symptoms of heart attacks and strokes
- CPR guidelines
YRDSB takes the safety and well-being of students, staff, families and community members very seriously. The Board continues to provide training to ensure that each school or workplace has at least two staff members trained in CPR and standard first aid.
