Aurora, ON – Results released today by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) show that York Region District School Board secondary students continue to demonstrate high rates of success in the province-wide testing.

Continuing the positive trend, the percentage of York Region public high school students who passed the 2014 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) substantially exceeded the provincial average. Of the 8,282 Grade 10 students who wrote the test for the first time, 90% were successful, compared with an average success rate of 83% among all school districts across Ontario.

For the Grade 9 mathematics assessment, 91% of York Region public secondary students in the “Academic” stream and 57% of students in the “Applied” stream achieved the provincial standard. This compares with a provincial average of 85% of “Academic” stream students and 47% of “Applied” stream students who achieved the standard.

“Our Board is so pleased to see our students continue to perform above the provincial average,” said Anna DeBartolo, Chair of the York Region District School Board. “We believe this success is a result of the strong partnerships with parents and members of our school community, combined with our continued focus on student achievement and well-being.

“York Region District School Board continues to inspire learning within our schools and we’re so proud of our students’ and Board’s strong record of achievement,” said J. Philip Parappally, Director of Education, York Region District School Board. “These provincial testing results are the outcome of the hard work and commitment of students, staff and families across York Region.”

The OSSLT has been administered each year since 2002 by the EQAO. Passing the test or alternatively, the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course, is a requirement for high school graduation.

Individual school results for the York Region District School Board will be published on the Board’s web site at www.yrdsb.ca on September 24, 2014. Individual student reports on Literacy Test results will be sent home with students between September 29 and October 3.

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 121,000 students in 174 elementary schools and 32 secondary schools. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing and the Board is one of the top achievers in Ontario.
