What:
Maple High School’s Drama Department received a prestigious invite to the SummerWorks Festival in Toronto after picking up a MIRA Award and Outstanding Production Award at the Sears Ontario Drama Festival Provincial Showcase for their original production, Amanah. Over thirty students perform in the play to originally composed music and vocals.
Inspired by real stories from Syrian migrants and folklore, Amanah is an original tale of immigration and cultural displacement. Created by drama and music students ages 15 to 18 and inspired by stories and first-hand accounts of the Syrian refugee crisis, Amanah tells the story of a family’s arduous journey from war-torn homeland to the intimidating sanctuary of an adopted country. Intermingling fantasy, fairy-tale and fact, the play serves as testament to humanity’s need for acceptance, community, and dutiful reverence of legacy.
SummerWorks is one of North America's largest summer festivals of Theatre, Film, Dance, Music, Live Art and more. Maple High School is one of only two school groups in Ontario invited to perform this year.
