Aurora – The new York Region District School Board secondary school, located at the intersection of Bur Oak Avenue and Almira Avenue, in the city of Markham will be named for educator and former YRDSB Director, Bill Hogarth.

As an educator for over 40 years, Bill Hogarth’s career led him through many aspects of education, from teacher of history and gifted students, to consultant, principal, superintendent with the North York school board, and finally Director of the York Region District School Board. Hogarth was the longest serving Director of Education at YRDSB, a tenure he held for 16 years. During this time, YRDSB more than doubled its size. The many positive effects of Hogarth’s leadership are apparent today as the Board continues to be recognized as one of the top performing school boards provincially, nationally and internationally.

“Mr. Hogarth’s commitment to life-long education and his former work as Director of this Board provides an inspiration for learning and building inclusive and collaborative environments that will support student achievement and well-being,” said Loralea Carruthers, Chair of the Board.

Members of the local community were invited to provide input on the naming of the new school, which is scheduled to open September 2017. The school will serve both the English track and French Immersion program.

“We look forward to welcoming students and staff to Bill Hogarth Secondary School,” said Director J. Philip Parappally. “I know this new school community will come together to create a welcoming, inclusive environment that fosters student achievement and well-being.”

“Naming a new school is an important responsibility and it is fitting that this new school is named for Bill Hogarth, who is known for leadership in education,” said Trustee Allan Tam.

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 123,000 students in 176 elementary schools and 32 secondary schools. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing and the Board is one of the top achievers in Ontario.
