Lauri Hoeg

Policy and By-Law Standing Committee Chair / Indigenous Trustee

Aaniin, I am a member of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation where I also reside. It is located on the southern shores of Lake Simcoe in Georgina and is the only First Nation reserve in York Region. The Chippewas of Georgina Island belong to the Anishinabek Nation and are a part of the Anishinabek Education System, one of 23 First Nation’s in Ontario who are in a self-governing education agreement with Canada.  We have our own constitution and our own education laws.

I have worked in Indigenous Education for over 30 years, serving my community as Education Manager and elected Band Councillor with the education and culture portfolios. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree from Toronto Metropolitan University in Public Administration and Governance. I am also a woodland artist and cultural teacher.

I believe that Indigenous students have the inherent right to an education where their world view matters, where they see themselves reflected in a system that supports their intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.

As the only appointed member of the Board of Trustees it is my honour to provide representation for all Indigenous students and their families of the York Region District School Board.

The role of a trustee comes with many important responsibilities. As a trustee, it is my role to communicate with members of the public and advocate for quality public education. The Board of Trustees is also responsible for making decisions about policies, budget and setting priorities for the Board through the Multi-Year Strategic Plan. I also serve on a number of Board committees.

We welcome feedback from the families and the communities we serve. I encourage you to regularly check the YRDSB website for news, updates and resources from the Board, including the Message from the Board Chair. You can also follow @YRDSB on Twitter for further updates.
