YRDSB Celebrates Tamil Heritage Month

Aurora, ON – Over the past month, York Region District School Board has hosted and participated in a series of events throughout York Region to celebrate Tamil Heritage Month.

These events were intended to increase awareness of and celebrate the contributions of persons of Tamil descent on the cultural, economic, political and social fabric of Ontario, and include:

  • School assemblies and workshops on Tamil heritage.
  • A Tamil Heritage Month Research Project inviting students in Grades 4-11 to participate in a research project that provides an opportunity for students and staff to learn about the rich history and contributions of Tamils.
  • A flag raising ceremony held on January 17 at the Education Centre in Aurora to honor Tamil Heritage Month.
  • Thai Pongal Celebrations with Markham Tamil Organization and Tamil Student Associations, and with the Stouffville Tamil Community.
  • International and Indigenous Languages Program workshops hosted by community partners.

“Tamil Heritage Month provides an opportunity to celebrate the rich Tamil heritage, culture and language and to raise awareness about the culture and the many contributions of Tamil Canadians,” said Initha Subramaniam, Teacher Liaison, York Region District School Board. “These events and learning opportunities help our students share their pride in their heritage and help us to build inclusive environments where they know their identities are respected and celebrated.”

Watch our students share what it means to them to celebrate Tamil Heritage Month and their Tamil heritage.
