York Region District School Board to Host Community Vigil

York Region District School Board Chair, Juanita Nathan and Director of Education, Louise Sirisko have issued the following statement regarding the plane crash in Iran yesterday:

We join Canadians and others around the world in mourning the loss of the victims of yesterday’s plane crash in Iran. We are heartbroken to learn that five of our students died in this devastating tragedy, from four of our schools: Adrienne Clarkson P.S., Beynon Fields P.S., Meadowbrook P.S. and Richmond Green S.S.

Our focus continues to be on providing support to students at the affected schools, and we have staff members trained in responding to tragic events at the schools this week.

We also know that there are staff members and families who are mourning the loss of loved ones. This is a tragedy that is being felt deeply in our community. We are all deeply saddened and our thoughts and condolences are with all those affected by this tragic event.

We will be hosting a community vigil to bring the community together and honour the lives of those who were lost. We hope that you are able to join us in support of the community. This is an outdoor event. Please dress warmly.

The event will be held on Monday, January 13, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. outside Dr. Bette Stephenson Centre for Learning in Richmond Hill. This event is being held in partnership with the City of Richmond Hill, York Catholic District School Board and York Regional Police.
