Self-Identified Indigenous Students Build First Hand Drums (Video)

SHARON, ON – On June 13, 2019, self-identified Indigenous students from York Region District School Board gathered to build their first hand drums under the direction of Musical Artist, Rod Nettagog (Minaade Sin Aankote/”Bluestone Cloud).

“The drum has played a big role in my personal well-being. It’s brought me to many places, opened many doors and opportunities for myself,” said Rod Nettagog, Musical Artist. “It played a really important role in my personal growth of finding out who I am as an Indigenous person.

Students were also taught the proper protocols, etiquette and responsibilities of caring for a sacred item.

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 124,000 students in 178 elementary schools and 33 secondary schools.
