Joint Message from YRP and YRDSB: Launch of new School Police Programs and Police School Board Protocol - September 2024

Message to Families

Dear Families,

On behalf of York Regional Police (YRP) and York Region District School Board (YRDSB) we are pleased to jointly share news with you regarding the launch of new school police programs and a new Police and School Boards Protocol in September 2024.

In 2021, YRDSB and YRP took a pause from their school police programs. Since this time, we have undertaken extensive review and consultation. The school police program is a joint collaboration and has been updated to align with each organization’s responsibility in education and community safety. The new programs and protocol are the result of this work, consultation and collaboration.

While we continue to finalize details of our partnership and work, for elementary students, the school police program may include important community safety topics including road safety, bike safety and pedestrian safety. For secondary students, the school police program may include sports, law and court mock trials, pathways to careers in policing and science related to speed measurement and impairment.

The complete details of the new school police programs and the Police and School Boards Protocol will be announced to families in September 2024.

We look forward to refreshing the police programs in schools and the launch of our new Police and School Boards Protocol in September 2024, for the start of the 2024-25 school year. The positive relationships we engage in are so important to the well-being of students and communities and we are both so grateful for this partnership and collaboration.
