York Region District School Board (YRDSB) secondary schools are welcoming students and families to open houses this fall, offering an opportunity to explore high school and learn more about programs, courses, and student life.
Designed to support the transition to secondary school, the events invite students and families to visit classrooms, meet staff, and learn more about opportunities and student supports.
“The transition to high school is an exciting and important milestone for students and families,” said Bill Cober, Chief Executive Officer. “Open houses give families and students a chance to experience our schools, and learn about the many opportunities and supports available in all of our high schools to help students explore their interests, achieve their goals and prepare for future pathways.”
Students and families can also access new online transition resources that include practical checklists and information to help students and families, particularly those in Grades 6-8, prepare for high school and make informed decisions.
YRDSB consistently ranks among the top school boards in Ontario, with students who consistently perform above average in provincial testing. All YRDSB secondary schools provide students with high-quality learning and real-world experiences in safe, inclusive and caring environments. Students can explore a variety of academic, arts, athletic, technological and experiential learning opportunities.
Families attending open houses will have the opportunity to:
- Learn about school programs, courses and extracurricular activities.
- Meet school administrators and staff.
- Tour learning spaces and facilities.
- Ask questions about course selection, pathways and student supports.
- Gain a better understanding of what to expect in secondary school.
Students can also explore specialized programs that require an application. Applications for the International Baccalaureate programme are open between October 16 and November 12, 2026. Online applications to Bill Crothers Secondary School close October 23, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. Specialized Arts program applications are also open this fall. Details are available on school websites.
