Aurora – The new York Region District School Board elementary school in Whitchurch-Stouffville will be named for award-winning Canadian author and illustrator Barbara Reid.

Barbara Reid has written and illustrated more than a dozen picture books, and has illustrated over 25. “I want to thank everyone who provided their input,” said Loralea Carruthers, Chair of the Board and Trustee for East Gwillimbury and Whitchurch-Stouffville. “Naming a new school is an important responsibility and I am pleased that this new school has a name that will inspire learning and be a positive influence within the school.”

Members of the local community were invited to provide input on the naming of the new school, which is scheduled to open September 2017.

“We look forward to welcoming Barbara Reid Public School into our family of schools, and to watching this new school community come together to create a welcoming, inclusive environment that fosters student achievement and well-being,” said Director J. Philip Parappally.
