The annual York Region District School Board Science Olympics is a competition that encourages and promotes skills and attitudes preparing learners for success in the 21st century.

The goal is to increase scientific literacy and global citizenship through problem-based learning, inquiry and performance tasks. Tasks are designed to build skills in literacy, numeracy and critical thinking as well as to enrich learning and engage students.

This year’s theme is Fun and Games and the following events will take place:

  • Junior Biology: Tick tock...tick tock...you’re against the clock!
  • Junior Chemistry: Chemistry is F-U-N (Fluorine-Uranium-Nitrogen)
  • Junior Physics: Operation Fun
  • Senior Biology: The Great Genome Race
  • Senior Chemistry: Show Your True Colour
  • Senior Physics: Marble Coaster

When:

Wednesday, May 3, 2017 from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
*Best photo opportunities: 9:45 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. (events) & 2:45 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. (Awards/Closing)

Why:

To provide an opportunity for students to apply what they are learning in the classroom and showcase student talent.

Who:

400 Grade 9-12 students from YRDSB secondary schools.
