Rick Hansen Public School Hosts Inspiring Accessibility Event for Students During National AccessAbility Week

Students at Rick Hansen P.S. experienced a day of inspiration and hands-on learning as the school hosted Rick Hansen: Many In Motion Day on June 2, 2026, during National AccessAbility Week.

The event marked the pilot of Rick Hansen: Many In Motion Day, created to engage students in advancing accessibility and removing barriers for people with disabilities. Held in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Man In Motion World Tour, the day brought powerful stories, interactive activities and meaningful lessons directly to the classroom.

Students and staff welcomed Rick Hansen who shared his journey from discovering new possibilities in a wheelchair to winning Paralympic gold and travelling the world to improve accessibility.

“We can't just take. We need to be able to be kind and give,” said Hansen. “I hope that this school becomes a champion and an example for schools all across the country.”

Students also heard from Canadian Paralympian Erica Scarff, who shared her story of resilience after losing her leg to cancer and finding success in paracanoe. Her message highlighted determination and the importance of inclusive opportunities in sport and everyday life.

Grade 4 students had the opportunity to take part in an interactive accessibility activity to identify features throughout their school that support inclusion. From ramps to automatic door openers, students discovered how their school environment is designed to ensure everyone can participate fully.

“Today I learned that our school has a whole bunch of accessible stuff that people with disabilities can all use, and can all be a part of the school together,” said Avery.

The event also encouraged students to take part in the Many In Motion pledge, reinforcing the importance of ongoing action and awareness in building inclusive communities.

“Today has been an absolutely incredible day,” said Principal Ryan Gobin. “And I think we've created a new generation of advocates for people with disabilities.”
