Four more important achievements to improve education in York Region

Aurora, ON — York Region District School Board (YRDSB) continued today to deliver on its commitments to students, parents and the York Region community – by meeting the next set of important milestones.

“Trustees and staff are united in fostering a school board that is welcoming, inclusive and open,” said Loralea Carruthers, chair of the YRDSB Board of Trustees. “Today, we are pleased to announce that we have delivered on four more commitments to improve education in York Region.”

Carruthers announced that this week, YRDSB met four of the directions provided by Ontario Education Minister Mitzie Hunter by submitting the following to the Ministry:

  • A report regarding support and recovery strategies for students and staff members who have felt the effects of equity issues.
  • A report on a process established to receive and respond to/investigate human rights complaints.
  • A report confirming that a senior administration position responsible for equity has been established.
  • Progress report on the establishment of an integrity commissioner office.

Last week, YRDSB met a number of other key milestones, noted Carruthers. These included the following:

  • A report from EAP provider that provides data reflecting the uptake of the services since the public release of the report.
  • A plan for equity training to be undertaken by the Board.
  • A plan for the Director and senior administration to undertake governance training.
  • A plan to re-build trust with communities in the board.

“YRDSB trustees and staff will continue to work overtime on building an educational system that is second to none,” Carruthers said. And she noted that Minister Hunter has previously said: “I am very pleased to see that [YRDSB is] moving forward and wants to take action in a positive direction.”

“We intend to continue to do what students, parents and stakeholders expect of us. That means transforming public education here in York Region,” added Carruthers. “That is the commitment I have made on behalf of trustees and staff – and it is a commitment we intend to keep.”

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 123,000 students in 176 elementary schools and 32 secondary schools. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing and the Board is one of the top achievers in Ontario.
