York Region District School Board Postpones All Graduations and Cancels All Proms for 2019-20 School Year Due to COVID-19

York Region, ON - York Region District School Board has postponed all Grade 8 and Grade 12 graduations and canceled all proms for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.

“As the situation with COVID-19 continues to evolve on a daily basis, our priority during this challenging time remains the health and safety of our students and staff,” said Chair of the Board, Juanita Nathan. “It is with much regret and after careful consideration, that we have made this difficult decision.”

This action is in line with physical distancing measures currently being taken by health authorities and various levels of government to stop the spread of COVID-19.

“We recognize that this is disappointing news. We are working to find alternate ways to recognize our students’ accomplishments and milestones that are in line with current health guidelines,” said Director of Education, Louise Sirisko.

Schools across Ontario currently remain closed by order from the Premier of Ontario to stop the spread of COVID-19.

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 127,000 students in 180 elementary schools and 33 secondary schools.
