Results of the report will be used to identify and eliminate systemic barriers and create more equitable and inclusive learning environments.
Aurora, ON – York Region District School Board (YRDSB) has completed it’s first student demographic survey, the Every Student Counts Survey (ESCS), and has made the initial results public.
The student survey was administered from November 12 through December 17, 2018 to families of Kindergarten to Grade 6 students and students in Grades 7 to 12.
“The purpose of the Every Student Counts Survey was to better understand our students’ identities, as well as their experiences inside and outside of school,” said Louise Sirisko, Director of Education. “ESCS results will be used to inform Board and school improvement planning.”
Results of the survey will be used to:
• identify and eliminate systemic barriers to student success;
• create more equitable and inclusive school environments; and,
• improve student achievement and well-being.
The ESCS Overall Board Report and Infographic are available on YRDSB’s Equity and Inclusive Education webpage. This report presents aggregate board-level results for Kindergarten to Grade 6, Grades 7 and 8, and Grades 9 to 12. The Infographic summarizes the demographic composition of YRDSB’s students.
“As a second phase in processing the survey data, ESCS data will be disaggregated by students’ social identities (e.g., racial identity) and linked to system data such as achievement, attendance and suspension,” said Cecil Roach, Coordinating Superintendent of Education, Indigenous Education and Equity. “We will be looking to our community partners to engage with us and inform this work.”
“York Region is one of the most diverse regions in Canada and the diversity of our board gives us great strengths,” said Juanita Nathan, YRDSB Board Chair. “Being able to see the demographics of our student population will help us to better meet the needs of all of our learners by identifying and eliminating systemic barriers to their success.”
