York Region District School Board Students Continue EQAO Success

November 4, 2022 – York Region District School Board students have surpassed most provincial averages in the recently released results from Ontario’s Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).

Among Grade 3 students in York Region District School Board, 78.5% achieved the provincial standards in reading, 73.4% in writing and 70.8% in mathematics. This compares with provincial averages of 73.2%, 64.9% and 59.0% respectively. 

Among York Region’s Grade 6 public school students, 90.0% achieved the provincial standard in reading, 91.8% in writing and 61.7% in mathematics. This compares with provincial averages of 84.9%, 84.1% and 47.2% respectively. 

“EQAO data is used to monitor progress and implement plans for continuous improvement in York Region District School Board schools,” said Allan Tam, Chair of the York Region District School Board. “Trustees support students and staff by designing plans, such as the Trustees’ Multi-Year Strategic Plan, that focuses on improving student achievement and well-being.” 

Of the 8,800 YRDSB students who wrote the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) for the first time, 89% met the provincial standard, compared with an average success rate of 82.1% among all school districts across Ontario.  

In 2021-2022, there was one math assessment based on the Grade 9 Destreamed Mathematics curriculum. For the Grade 9 mathematics assessment, 71.7% of YRDSB secondary students achieved the provincial standard. This compares with a provincial average of 52.3% of all students in the province who achieved the standard.

“We are proud of the achievements of our students, supported by families and staff members, and will continue to identify ways to improve learning outcomes for all,” said Scott Yake, Interim Director of Education. “We use data from the EQAO report, along with other assessment data, to inform our improvement plans.”
