York Region District School Board Trustees Vote to Rename Vaughan Secondary School

At its September 15, 2020 Board Meeting, York Region District School Board trustees voted unanimously to rename Vaughan Secondary School following the presentation of a report on renaming the school.

This decision is consistent with Policy #445, School Names policy and procedures, that requires school names to be based on principles of equity and considers the culture, history and accomplishments of the school(s) affected.

“It is important that our education system is responsive to the lived experiences of all of our community members, including students and families of our Black community,” said Juanita Nathan, Board Chair. “Students, staff members and families can continue to feel proud of being a part of this school and a school community that centres equity and inclusivity and shows a commitment to anti-Black racism.”

The school is named after Benjamin Vaughan, a historical figure who has associations with slavery. Community members have expressed feelings of hurt with the school name.

“Addressing anti-Black racism is a priority for York Region District School Board,” said Director of Education Louise Sirisko. “The name of a school should be supported by the local community and provide opportunities for students, parents and community members to be inspired to learn.”

More details about the renaming process will be shared as information becomes available. As a first step, today the Board has removed the name “Vaughan” from the front signage of the school.

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 128,000 students in 180 elementary schools and 33 secondary schools. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing and the Board is one of the top achievers in Ontario.
