York Region Public Elementary Students Continue EQAO Success

Aurora, ON – York Region District School Board continues to exceed provincial averages in the recently released 2018 results from Ontario’s Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).

“The Board of Trustees has been working hard to improve student achievement and well-being and create learning environments that are welcoming and inclusive,” said Corrie McBain, Chair of the York Region District School Board. “We are proud that our students continue to exceed the provincial averages. This achievement is supported by committed families and staff members. Through our new Multi-Year Strategic Plan, our Board of Trustees demonstrate our commitment to student success.”

Among Grade 3 students in York Region District School Board, 81%achieved the provincial standards in reading, 80% in writing and 71% in mathematics. This compares with provincial averages of 75%, 72% and 61%respectively.

Among York Region’s Grade 6 public school students, 88% achieved the provincial standard in reading, 88% in writing and 61% in mathematics. This compares with provincial averages of 82%, 80% and 49% respectively.

“We will be using EQAO data combined with other forms of assessment, including the Every Student Count Survey this fall, to help us to identify areas of improvement for our schools and system,” said Louise Sirisko, Director of Education, York Region District School Board. “This rich data will inform our Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Well-Being, which will help every student soar.”
