Aurora, ON — The York Region District School Board has received an update on the estimated cost for a by-election to replace former trustee Nancy Elgie in Georgina. The one-ballot vote is now estimated to cost the Town $160,000 – nearly half of the $296,000 that was originally quoted.

“We are relieved that the Town was able to lower their original estimate to hold a by-election. The new estimate is significantly less than we were initially advised,” said YRDSB Board Chair Loralea Carruthers. “The lower cost of a by-election certainly increases the feasibility of this option and it will likely have an impact on the community’s decision.”

At a March 7 board meeting, a committee was established to determine how to fill the vacant seat. The board decided to hold public consultations and solicit community feedback on how best to fill the position. The alternative to a by-election is an appointment process.

“Both options are on the table at this point,” said Carruthers. “As a board, we strive to engage with the community to determine the best course of action. Seeking public input on this matter is just one of the steps we are taking as we work to restore public trust in our school board.”

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 123,000 students in 176 elementary schools and 32 secondary schools. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing and the Board is one of the top achievers in Ontario.
