Aurora, ON – A York Region District School Board student, Noel Varghese, from Legacy Public School in Markham will be awarded the Community Safety Net Award on June 27th at the year-end school assembly.

The 12-year-old Noel Varghese beat out students across North America to win the national letter-writing contest and will receive a brand new, engraved iPad, presented to him by Community Safety Net and York Regional Police.

“Our school is very pleased to be able to celebrate Noel’s achievement. We are also very excited he was able to use his strong writing skills to discuss the importance of community and drug safety,” said Principal Laura Ryckman.

Annually, the Community Safety Net award is given to the student who writes the best letter about the benefits of safety education, what he or she has learned, or how safety education has made a difference in his or her life. Noel’s letter on drug safety and the impact it had on his life was the winning submission.

Noel was inspired to write the letter after watching a drug safety awareness educational presentation conducted by York Regional Police in his school.

Community Safety Net (CSN) has partnered with York Regional Police and has worked with community organizations for nearly 30 years to provide educational safety resources that are used in communities across the United States and Canada.
