January 5 marks the birth anniversary of the tenth and last living Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.
This warrior, poet, and philosopher Guru embodied service to humanity in all of his actions. Guru Gobind Singh fought against oppression by infusing a martial spirit in all people who choose to live by the tenets ordained by the 1st Guru, Guru Nanak Sahib. In 1699 he founded the order of the Khalsa, and institutionalized the religious articles of faith; the turban and the 5 K’s. He also blessed his followers with the name Singh meaning lion for men and the name Kaur meaning lioness/princess for women.
We extend our best wishes to students, staff and members of the Sikh community who will be celebrating this occasion.
