Yes, please include your OCT number and/or your Transitional Certificate of Qualification and Registration number in your application.

The YRDSB will consider those who are interested in teaching French, including experienced and faculty students.

Yes, should you be hired into a Long Term Occasional (LTO) assignment and/or Contract/Permanent position with the Board, you must have FSL to teach French with YRDSB. However, in some cases the Board can seek approval through the Ministry of Education to hire a French teacher without French as a Second Language (FSL) for a specified period of time, after all qualified French Teachers are exhausted.

Yes, you may apply. However, job offers will be conditional on obtaining the FSL qualification or equivalent. A Temporary Letter of Approval (TLA) will need to be obtained due to Ministry of Education teacher qualification guidelines.

There are a number of providers for AQs including ETFO, as well as all universities (e.g. York, OISE, etc.). You'll need to check their websites for information. Prices vary but all offer both online and face-to-face learning. Please refer to the Ontario College of Teachers website for more information.

Yes, the FLA is a YRDSB-specific requirement to teach French with the Board. For more information on the FLA, please refer to the French Language Assessment (FLA) page.

French Language Assessment

The French Language Assessment (FLA) page is required for all candidates who would like to teach French at York Region District School Board.  The FLA is used to evaluate both the productive and receptive skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Yes. All candidates must participate in the Board language assessment process.

You can be reassessed within 4 to 6 months from your last assessment, provided you can demonstrate evidence/additional experiences that have given you opportunity to further your French proficiency (i.e. continued learning, workshops, etc.). 

Yes. However, we would like to see that you've done something to improve your French before reassessing.

Yes, based upon the Board’s needs.

Interviews

Candidates who have successfully completed the FLA are eligible to apply to any position of interest and in which they hold the required qualifications.  For further information on the French hiring process please refer to the French Teacher Hiring Process.

No, all interviews are conducted in English.

Interviews may be conducted both virtually and in-person. If you receive an interview invitation, it will state the format of your interview.
