In your school community, there are many people who can answer your questions or direct you to the appropriate supports. Here are some supports you may wish to access.
English as a Second Language
Your school has an English as a Second Language Department where you will find resources and supports to help you with your English language skills and to become accustomed to secondary school life.
First Nation, Metis, Inuit Education
For First Nation, Metis, and Inuit (FNMI) students there are additional opportunities and supports available. You may wish to voluntarily inform your school of your Aboriginal ancestry. Your information will be kept confidential. If you wish to self-identify you may complete the appropriate section on the secondary school registration form before you begin secondary school or you can speak to your Principal, Vice-Principal or guidance counsellor to obtain the Aboriginal Self-Identification Form.
Guidance counsellors support students with educational and career/life planning. Guidance departments support a variety of counselling needs: academic, career, pathways, personal, and referral to additional resources. The Guidance Webpage has a variety of resources to help you navigate through secondary school and beyond.
Homework Help
Your school may offer homework help such as homework clubs or peer tutors. The Ontario Ministry of Education provides online math homework support for students in grades 7 to 10 called Homework Help.
On Line Tools and Resources and Your School Resource Centre / Library
Your Teacher Librarian can help you navigate through the many print and electronic resources you will encounter. They provide literacy supports such as research and referencing skills. In addition to the resources available at your school, there are many external web sites and web tools available for you to use.
If you have an Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.), you will have a Special Education Resource Teacher and you may be registered in the Learning Strategies course. The resource teacher will assist you and your teachers with programs and services to meet your learning needs. If you need more information about the program and services available to you, please contact your Principal or the Special Education Department Head.
Student Success Teachers advocate and mentor students to ensure a successful transition into and throughout secondary school. Your Student Success Teacher can help you with work habits, study and learning skills, and along with your classroom teacher, provide academic support.
There are many public agencies, organizations and services in your community to support you with problems or concerns that may occur either in school or at home. You can contact these agencies yourself or you can ask for support from a trusted adult.
