Aurora, ON – A group of Grade 10 history students from Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School in Aurora placed second in the Grant McRae Commemorative Contest with their video submission.

The national contest, hosted by Historica Canada, was comprised of submissions of artwork, poetry, videos and short stories in commemoration of McRae.

The video was inspired by guest speaker, Carl Bedal, a local World War II veteran, who met with students at the school to discuss his time in the military.

“After hearing Mr. Bedal speak, we knew we had to honour him somehow,” said Sanjay Singh, student project co-lead. “So we wrote a poem and decided to turn it into a video.”

“When we came up with the idea to honour Mr, Bedal with a video, we didn’t even intend to submit it to the contest, that was an afterthought,” said Nathalie Ganesh, student project co-lead.

“This is well-deserved recognition for the hard work our students put forth to honour Mr. Bedal and his efforts during the war,” said Christopher Hilmer, Principal of Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School. “We are proud of their accomplishments.”

The Dr. G.W. Williams S.S. video and other contest submissions are available on the Historica Canada website.
