Reducing Use of Disposable Bottles

News Release

11/28/2016

Aurora, ON – All schools in York Region District School Board now have water bottle filling stations to help reduce the use of disposable plastic bottles.

The filling stations make it easier to fill reusable water bottles and let staff members and students know how many disposable bottles have been saved.

“Our students and staff members continue to show commitment to taking an active role to support the environment. These filling stations support that commitment and let students see the difference they are making in reducing waste,” said Director of Education J. Philip Parappally.

“Modeling continuous environmental sustainability is one of the goals outlined in our multi-year plan,” said Chair of the Board Anna DeBartolo. “This is one more measure that is helping us to achieve that goal, and enables students to take actions that will make a difference.”

This is just one of the measures the Board is taking to support environmental awareness and sustainability. In addition:

  • The Board has 113 certified EcoSchools and Outdoor Education Centres, and four administrative centres with Eco Workplace certification.
  • Schools can audit their energy use and waste production through the Board’s EcoWatch program.
  • For the second year in a row, the York Region District School Board was named as one of Ontario’s top five energy efficient school boards by the Sustainable Schools Initiative.
  • Last year, total electricity consumption in the Board was reduced.

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 123,000 students in 176 elementary schools and 32 secondary schools. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing and the Board is one of the top achievers in Ontario.
