Students Build Community and Celebrate Culture at Richmond Hill High School

The Afro-Caribbean Student Association (ACSA) at Richmond Hill HS School is giving Black-identifying students a safe space to connect, celebrate culture, and lead meaningful change in their school community.

Founded two years ago, the club was created to provide a positive environment where students could share their experiences, build community, and organize events that reflect their voices and interests.

“It’s a place where we feel seen, supported, and celebrated,” said Jocelyn, Grade 11 and Vice-President of ACSA.

Through events like Black History Month celebrations, meet-and-greets with elementary schools, and activities like cultural games and food sharing, ACSA is helping to educate and unite students of all backgrounds.

Staff members play a supportive role, helping students take the lead. “It’s about giving students a voice,” said guidance counsellor Janine Lane. “They’re passionate, and we want to make sure they’re heard not just in the school, but in the community too.”
