Students enrolled in the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Health and Wellness programs visited York University to learn about health care careers.
During the visit, students explored nursing and anatomy labs, athletic therapy spaces, and tried suturing workshops, gaining hands-on experience in health care.
Through meeting faculty and current university students, they were able to see first-hand what post-secondary life and careers in health and wellness could look like. From biology and kinesiology to healthcare pathways, this trip helped students connect their classroom learning to real-world applications and discover new possibilities for their future.
Specialist High Skills Majors enable students to specialize in an economic sector of interest while in secondary school by choosing courses related to that sector and participating in a number of planned experiential opportunities, such as co-op, field trips and post-secondary tours.
There are many opportunities in YRDSB secondary schools to build transferable skills, gain experience and explore interests in health and wellness and other areas of interest. Visit www.yrdsb.ca/expeience-yrdsb to learn more.
