York Region District School Board recently held its first Prompt‑a‑Thon, giving students the opportunity to explore real‑world challenges using generative AI.
Held at the York University Markham Campus, the event brought together students in Grades 7–12. Working in teams, students used board‑approved AI tools to develop thoughtful solutions to real challenges. Students also played an active role in planning and supporting the event.
Throughout the day, students engaged in discussions about how AI can support learning - while continuing to build important skills like critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving.
“It’s great that we’re here because we can learn a lot about how AI can not replace humans, but help people in the future,” said Ivy, a Grade 8 student at Franklin Street P.S..
The event enabled students to apply the Board’s Student AI Guidelines, released earlier this year. Students worked through a process of researching, refining their ideas and evaluating AI-generated responses to develop their solutions.
“What I’ve noticed today and what I’m hoping they’ll get out of today is really centering themselves and ensuring that they do not lose their agency, their voice and their originality, “ said Zach Teitel, English Department Head, Unionville HS.
Congratulations to the two winning teams:
