Thornhill, ON – Students from Thornhill S.S. placed first and third at two separate programming events, with one student going on to represent Canada internationally.

Joey Yu placed first in the week-long University of Waterloo Canadian Computing Olympiad against the top 20 Computer Science students in Canada, based on his results in the Canadian Computing Competition. Yu will now represent Canada in the International Olympiad for Informatics in Tsukuba, Japan later this year.

“We are incredibly proud of Joey’s accomplishments at this year’s Canadian Computing Olympiad,” said Peter Benum, Teacher at Thornhill S.S. “To be named as the top Canadian programmer and have the honour of representing our country on the world stage is an impressive accomplishment."

At the ECOO Provincial Programming Contest, a team of students comprised of Edward Boguslavski, Joey Yu, Raymond Zhang, Liran Zheku and coached by Peter Benum, placed third out of all the participating Ontario schools. YRDSB also had six other teams qualify and compete in the event, five of which placed in the top 10.

“To have five teams in the top 10 out of a total of 30 qualifying teams from across the province is a testament to how strong our YRDSB Computer Science programs are,” said David McAdam, Principal of Thornhill S.S. “Congratulations to all participants.”

Thornhill S.S. students continue a legacy begun last year by Computer Science students from Pierre Elliot Trudeau H.S. At last year’s ECOO contest, the Pierre Elliot Trudeau H.S. team was named the top programming team in the country and one of the team members, Jason Yuen, finished in first place at the CCO.
