York Region District School Board Students Continue EQAO Success

October 12, 2023 – York Region District School Board students have surpassed provincial averages in the recently released results from Ontario’s Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).

Among Grade 3 students in York Region District School Board, 77.1% achieved the provincial standards in reading, 72.7% in writing and 70.7% in mathematics. This compares with provincial averages of 72.6%, 65.5% and 59.7% respectively. 

Among York Region’s Grade 6 public school students, 88.2% achieved the provincial standard in reading, 90.0% in writing and 63.8% in mathematics. This compares with provincial averages of 83.7%, 83.6% and 49.5% respectively. 

“York Region District School Board uses EQAO data as one method to monitor progress and to assist in the development and implementation of plans for continuous improvement in our schools,” said Ron Lynn, Chair of the York Region District School Board. “As a Board of Trustees, we continue to support students and staff through the development of the Trustees’ Multi-Year Strategic Plan that focuses on improving student achievement and well-being.” 

Of the 9,700 YRDSB students who wrote the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) for the first time, 92.8% met the provincial standard, compared with an average success rate of 84.7% among all school districts across Ontario.  

For the Grade 9 mathematics assessment, 70.5% of YRDSB secondary students achieved the provincial standard. This compares with a provincial average of 53.7% of all students in the province who achieved the standard.

“These provincial assessment results are the outcome of the commitment and efforts of our YRDSB students, staff, families and community partners,” said Bill Cober, Director of Education. “The data from the EQAO report will be used, along with other assessment data, to inform Board and school improvement plans to improve learning outcomes for all.”
