In September of 2024, York Region District School Board will open two new elementary schools in the towns of Aurora and Kleinburg. The YRDSB Board of Trustees are seeking input from the new school communities to assist in naming the two new schools.
All new schools go through a naming process led by the local trustee. As stated in Policy and Procedure #445, School Names, “Establishing school names provides a unique opportunity to enhance the identity of the local community, the Board and its schools. School names must support the Board’s mission, vision and values, Board priorities and meet the best interests of students and the community."
“The process of naming a new school is a wonderful opportunity to engage its community to ensure the name of the schools is an accurate reflection of the people who live there,” said Nadeem Mahmood, Trustee for King and Vaughan Ward 1. “I look forward to hearing from the community and ensuring their voices are represented in this process.”
“As a board of trustees, we are excited to be opening two new schools in 2024 and to have the chance to engage our communities in the naming process,” said Melanie Wright, Trustee for Aurora and Whitchurch-Stouffville. “The feedback our communities give will ensure the chosen names resonate with our school community.”
Families of both new schools will receive a letter providing them with an opportunity to provide their input. The opportunity to provide input will remain open until January 17, 2024.
