Aurora, ON – Results released today by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) show that York Region District School Board secondary students continue to outperform provincial averages in the province-wide testing.
Of the 8,576 Grade 10students who wrote the 2018 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) for the first time, 87% were successful, compared with an average success rate of 79% among all school districts across Ontario.
For the Grade 9 mathematics assessment, 90% of York Region public secondary students in the “Academic” stream and 51% of students in the “Applied” stream achieved the provincial standard. This compares with a provincial average of 84% of “Academic” stream students and 45% of “Applied” stream students who achieved the standard.
“YRDSB continues to focus on student achievement and well-being,” said Corrie McBain, Chair of the York Region District School Board. “We are pleased to see our students continue to perform above the provincial average. Through our new Multi-Year Strategic Plan, our Board of Trustees demonstrate our commitment to student success.”
“EQAO data will be used along with other forms of assessment data, including classroom teacher assessments and our upcoming Every Student Counts Survey, to inform our Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Well-Being,” said Louise Sirisko, Director of Education, York Region District School Board. “In collaboration with families and our communities, we continue our work to create learning environments where every student can soar.”
The OSSLT has been administered each year since 2002 by the EQAO. Passing the test or alternatively, the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course, is a requirement for high school graduation.
Individual school results for York Region District School Board will be published on EQAO’s website on September 19.
