Aurora, ON – Results released today by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) show that York Region District School Board secondary students continue to outperform provincial averages in the province-wide testing.

Of the 8,553 Grade 10 students who wrote the 2017 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) for the first time, 88% were successful, compared with an average success rate of 81% among all school districts across Ontario.

For the Grade 9 mathematics assessment, 90% of York Region public secondary students in the “Academic” stream and 48% of students in the “Applied” stream achieved the provincial standard. This compares with a provincial average of 83% of “Academic” stream students and 44% of “Applied” stream students who achieved the standard.

“While we recognize there’s work to do to improve student achievement and well-being, we are pleased to see our students continue to perform above the provincial average,” said Loralea Carruthers, Chair of the York Region District School Board. “As a Board of Trustees, we are committed to developing sustainable improvement and ensuring equity and inclusion in all our school communities.”

“These reports will be used along with other forms of assessment data, including classroom teacher assessments and our recent climate survey, to inform our Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Well-Being,” said Kathryn Wallace, Interim Director of Education, York Region District School Board. “Working with families and our communities, we continue to strive to create safe and welcoming working and learning with a strong focus on student achievement and well-being.”

The OSSLT has been administered each year since 2002 by the EQAO. Passing the test or alternatively, the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course, is a requirement for high school graduation.

Individual school results for York Region District School Board will be published on EQAO’s website on September 20.
