YRDSB Launches New Positive Space Sticker

York Region District School Board has launched a new student-designed positive space sticker to assist in creating welcoming and inclusive environments.

A positive space sticker is a visible symbol of respect and support for 2SLGBTQI+ communities. It communicates a commitment to welcome and include all members of the 2SLGBTQI+ communities and create a safer space that is free from the discrimination and harassment that individuals and their families face daily. The presence of a sticker represents a commitment to the dismantling of systems of oppression.

The new positive space sticker was determined through a contest that was open to all students as well as elementary Gender Sexuality Alliances (GSA). The winning design was created by the Unicornellers GSA from Cornell Village PS.

“Our new positive space sticker will serve as an important reminder to all our students, staff and community members of the necessity of inclusion and celebration of all people’s identities in all spaces at our Board,” said Cecil Roach, Associate Director of Education, Equitable Outcomes and Schools. “Through education, we will ensure our schools are positive spaces where all students can feel celebrated and affirmed.”

“The importance of GSAs in our schools cannot be overstated. Research confirms that the presence of a GSA has both a positive and lasting impact on mattering, belonging, and well-being for our queer students, as well as the entire school community,” said Hayden Bendavid, Equity Teacher Facilitator. “Having a new positive space sticker designed by a GSA is an inspiring step forward for our Board on our path to creating inclusive spaces for all.”

“Having our design featured as the official positive space sticker for all of YRDSB has been an amazing experience for myself and my students,” said Bonny Skinner, GSA Advisor for the Cornell Village PS Unicornellers. “My students and I love knowing that there will be a bit of our spirit, creativity and passion for inclusivity in all the positive spaces of YRDSB schools.”
