Specialized Arts Programs

YRDSB has a specialized arts program for:

  • Students in Grades 5-8 at Baythorn Public School
  • Specialized Arts programs in four secondary schools. 

 

Elementary Arts Program


The specialized Arts program in elementary is a four-year integrative arts program. York Region students have the opportunity to explore the disciplines of dance, drama, visual arts and music while meeting the necessary curricular requirements for the grades five, six, seven and eight programs. This program is currently offered at Baythorn Public School

The elementary specialized arts program hosts information sessions in the late fall and registration opens in February. 

 

Secondary Specialized Arts Program


Explore, Create, Perform

The Specialized Arts Program is a four-year arts program for students who are committed to deepening their understanding, skills and experience in the Arts while earning their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

Students in the program take two specialized arts credits per year. The program is offered in four disciplines: 

  • Dance
  • Music
  • Drama
  • Visual Arts

No matter which discipline you choose, students are supported in developing both artistic excellence and academic success.

In addition to the courses, students benefit from enriched learning experiences, including:

  • Working with guest artists.
  • Attending performances and exhibitions.
  • Performing or exhibiting their own creative work.

Students who complete the program receive a Specialized Arts certificate.

Who is the Specialized Arts program for?


The Specialized Arts Program is designed for students who:

  • Are passionate about the arts.
  • Enjoy creative expression and artistic challenge.
  • Want to deepen their skills and knowledge in a specific art form.
  • Are motivated to commit time and effort to their artistic growth.
  • Are considering post-secondary pathways in the Arts or looking to strengthen skills valuable in any future career. 

Students who attend YRDSB elementary schools will be well prepared to apply to this program. Students do not need to be participating in Arts programs outside of school to apply. 


Students who are interested in the Arts can also take courses in the Arts at all secondary schools, or consider taking a Specialist High Skills Major in Arts and Culture. 


 

Where is the Specialized Arts program offered?


Students apply to the Specialized Arts Program at the school that serves their attendance boundary. Use the school locator on the Board website to find your Specialized Arts school.

Please note: Transportation is not provided to any of our YRDSB Specialized Arts programs. 

 

How and when do I apply?


Admission to the Specialized Arts Program is based on an application process.  Students apply while they are in Grade 8. Registration opens in November and applications are available in late fall.
