December 2024 - Reflecting

Reflecting

Reflecting happens when students go beyond just solving a problem and take time to think about the strategies they used and whether their solution makes sense.

Reflecting involves:

  • Thinking about whether their strategy is leading towards a solution and whether there might be a different way to solve the problem
  • Considering how what they have learned can be used with math problems they’ve seen before
  • Checking to see whether a solution is reasonable
  • Making adjustments to strategies and models used

To encourage your child to engage in reflecting, you can ask questions like:

  • Have you thought about…?
  • What do you notice about…?
  • Does this problem/answer make sense to you…?
  • How can you check your answer?
  • What was your thinking as you worked through this task?

When your child solves any kind of problem, you can ask them to think about what they did to solve the problem and how they know their answer makes sense.
