April 2025 - Selecting Tools

In mathematics, tools refer to physical objects or digital resources that students use to explore and understand mathematical concepts. Students learn how to choose tools to help them solve problems and to represent and communicate their understanding of mathematical concepts.

These tools can include counters, number lines, geometric shapes, calculators, graphing software, rulers, protractors, and even everyday objects like beans or blocks for counting.

Selecting and using tools in mathematics helps students to:

  • See patterns and mathematical relationships.
  • Make connections between concrete, visual, and abstract representations.
  • Try out their ideas, correct mistakes, and confirm their thinking
  • Remember how they solved a problem.
  • Communicate their ideas to classmates and teachers more clearly

You can support your child in using tools at home by providing them with choices when demonstrating their understanding of a math concept.

For example:

Have your child select the appropriate tool for measuring the length and width of a planter box. Would you like to use a measuring tape, a plastic ruler, or a digital ruler?

When counting, do you want to represent your thinking using blocks, counters, or a number line?

Here are some resources to support the use of tools at home:
