Celebrating Culture and Pathways: An East Asian Family Engagement Event for Student Success

Students and families had the opportunity to learn more about educational pathways in Mandarin and Cantonese and enjoy cultural performances at an engagement event for East Asian students and families.

The York Region District School Board event combined pathway planning with cultural celebrations, supporting student success and family and community engagement. These sessions offered in multiple languages shared information about academic and career options while ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for all participants.

The night kicked-off with a range of student performances, including music from False Jazz, a jazz quartet from Pierre Elliott Trudeau H.S., and Chinese folk and ballet dance performances. A special performance by the Taiwanese drumming group, Ten Drums Art Percussion Group, added to the vibrant atmosphere and community celebration.

Beyond the performances, the event was centred around providing families with the tools and resources needed to support their child’s academic and career planning. Pathway planning workshops help students and their families better understand how to reach their academic goals throughout their school career, post-secondary education and beyond.

The large turnout emphasizes the value of this approach. The event provided families with an engaging and empowering space to network, learn and walk away with a clear understanding of the tools and resources available to them to better support their children’s academic goals.
