One of the most powerful aspects of the Olympic Games is the way the country comes together—uniting to cheer on our athletes, celebrate their achievements, and lift them up through both triumphs and challenges. That same spirit of collective pride and support is reflected in our board and school communities. It is deeply inspiring to see how families, staff and students come together to recognize effort, celebrate success and stand alongside one another.
It is equally moving to watch dreams take shape. It is not lost on us that we have the privilege of being a part of that journey for so many of our students, supporting them as they discover their strengths and pursue their dreams.
As we move through the school year, we are always thinking about what comes next for your child. Supporting students as they move smoothly from one stage of their education to the next is a significant focus for us.
We know that change can feel exciting, but it can also be a little intimidating. Whether your child is just starting out or getting ready to graduate, we want to make sure students and families have the information you need to feel prepared and supported.
Here are some of the ways we are helping students prepare for what’s ahead:
- Starting Kindergarten: Elementary schools are planning Discover Kindergarten events. This is a great opportunity for families to meet Kindergarten teams, learn more about the program and get tips on how to help children feel excited and ready for school.
- Secondary School Course Selection: For older students, it is time to choose courses for next year - balancing graduation requirements with interests and goals. We have tips to support students in making these decisions, and school staff are there to help.
- Preparing for the Future: Artificial Intelligence. Part of preparing students for life after graduation includes helping them understand new technology. Artificial intelligence has quickly become a part of life and work, and we want to ensure students know how to use it effectively, responsibly and safely. Earlier this week, we shared our new student AI guidelines with families. We encourage you to read through them and use the conversation starters on our website to talk to your child about what AI looks like in their life.
- Coming Soon: The Transition Hub. As we talk about transitions, we are excited to let you know that we will soon be sharing our Transition Hub. Based on our Transitions Strategy, this online space will be full of practical tips and resources to help students and families navigate the changes - both big and small - that happen throughout their school years.
February is also a month of celebration and recognition in our schools.
- During Black History Month, we are proud to recognize the contributions of Black Canadians and communities. We invite families to check our Board calendar and subscribe to the Centre for Black Student Excellence mailing list to see upcoming Board and community events.
- February is also Chinese Heritage Month and we are honouring the identities, diverse experiences and achievements of Chinese students, families and staff in our school board and community. Thank you to the many families who joined us for our Chinese Heritage Month event.
- It is also the month of Lunar New Year and Chinese New Year, and we wish all those celebrating a wonderful celebration with friends and family as well as a prosperous and healthy year ahead!
As we move into the Family Day weekend, we want to take this opportunity to express our deepest appreciation for the professionalism, dedication and innovation of our staff. Every day, we see examples of the level of care and commitment they bring to their profession for the benefit of our students.
We also want to thank our students who inspire us every day with their creativity, curiosity, perseverance and effort. And to you - the families - who remain our most important partners and who play an essential role in building the cultures of care and excellence within our schools.
We hope you enjoy the winter weather this weekend and have a safe and happy Family Day long weekend.
Sincerely,
Ron Lynn, Chair
