International Languages - Secondary Students

Registration for the 2021-2022 school year is now open.

Did you know there are many benefits to taking credit language courses?

International Languages Secondary Courses can be applied toward the Ontario Secondary Diploma as a Group 1 - Compulsory or as an Elective Credit.

Students in the Secondary International Languages program can earn up to three credits towards graduation.

If students successfully complete the Level D - University course, it can be used as one of their top six marks for post-secondary entry. For example, if a student takes Spanish Level B, C and D, the student can submit their Level D mark as one of the top six marks for post-secondary applications.

In accordance with the Ministry of Education and Public Health directives to ensure the safety of our students and staff, all secondary courses will take place online. Please note the program delivery model may change from online to face-to-face during the school year. Please continue to check our webpage for updates.

Courses run from October to June.

Open to students, grades 9 to 12, non-native and native speakers.

A $10.00 consumable fee is collected in the third class.

Any book fees will be collected during class hours as required. Students will be responsible for purchasing the course textbook/course packs, which will be sold in September.

International fee-paying visa students are required to pay an additional $500 fee, for a total of $510.

A prerequisite is not required for a Level B course. Level B is a perquisite for a Level C course of the same language. Level C is a perquisite for a Level D course of the same language. Students must have the required prerequisite course in order to enroll in a Level C or Level D course regardless of fluency.

Official written proof of successful completion of Level B or C in Ontario, or an Official Report Card that demonstrates successful completion of a course equivalent to Level B or C in the language must be presented to home school Guidance staff and/or the International and Indigenous Languages Principal.

Advance standing is only granted to students who have recently arrived (6-12 months) in Ontario and have an equivalent course prerequisite from the home province/country. If you are uncertain, please do not hesitate to consult us via email at ilil@yrdsb.ca.

The Advanced Placement (AP) course is available to high school students who have successfully completed the Level C or equivalent education. The AP exam is typically at the difficulty level of first-year university courses, and; therefore, most Ontario universities often award university-level credit for earning high scores on these exams. Also, the Advanced Placement course enables and academically prepares students to pursue university-level studies.
At this time, our program offers an AP Simplified Mandarin course. Since only one section of the AP course is offered, registration is first-come, first-served. Additional fees apply. If you are interested, please contact our main office: ilil@yrdsb.ca.
