York Region District School Board has received a report from Dr. Mary Reid of University of Toronto and Dr. Ardavan Eizadirad of Wilfrid Laurier University regarding anti-Asian racism in York Region.
Dr. Reid and Dr. Eizadirad have consulted the Asian staff, students, and community of York Region and have developed recommendations aimed supporting YRDSB schools in being identity- affirming learning and working spaces for Asian students and staff.
The report will help to inform the action items of the YRDSB Dismantling Hate and Oppression Framework, which is currently in development.
“This report will be a valuable resource to inform the development of our Dismantling Hate and Oppression Framework,” said Ron Lynn, Chair of the Board. “It is imperative that we continue our work to dismantle anti-Asian racism and all forms of hate to ensure our schools and workplaces are safe and inclusive environments for all.”
“We thank Dr. Reid and Dr. Eizadirad for their comprehensive report and for engaging the Asian community in their consultation process,” said Cecil Roach, Associate Director of Education, Equitable Outcomes and School. “Their findings will directly influence the action items of our Dismantling Hate and Oppression Framework and will help to ensure that our Asian students, staff and family members are learning and working in identity-affirming spaces.”
The report from Dr. Reid and Dr. Eizadirad is available on the Board’s website. The Dismantling Hate and Oppression Framework will be released in the 2023-24 school year.
