February 2022 - Games and Puzzles

Playing math games has always been valued in math class as part of the delivery of a Comprehensive Math Program.  Did you know that the games you play at home also support mathematical development?  Whether you are playing a board game like Snakes and Ladders or an online game like Solitaire, important math skills are being developed as you play.

We often think about jigsaw puzzles when we hear the term used at home, but did you know there are a lot of different types of puzzles that you can use to support a child’s mathematical development at home?  Jigsaw puzzles are an amazing way to support the development of spatial reasoning and visualization skills as kids explore geometric concepts such as shape and size when they fit the pieces of a puzzle together.  Have you ever heard of Sudoku, Magic Squares or Ken Ken puzzles?  They are mathematical puzzles that children can work through that are fun and engaging while supporting the development of problem solving, reasoning, and number sense.

Did you know that the YRDSB public site offers lots of different resources including games you can play at home?  Please visit Supporting Math Learning at Home to find games to play with students in Kindergarten to Grade 3, Grades 4 to 6, and Grades 7 to 10.
