2024 Elementary Summer School

Grade 6, 7 and 8 Summer School (In-Person and Remote Learning)

The York Region District School Board offers a Grade 6, 7 & 8 Summer School program. This 15-day literacy and numeracy program is designed to reinforce curriculum and is not an acceleration opportunity. Students must register in the program for their current school grade. For example, a grade 7 student would register for the grade 7 program as it reinforces grade 7 content.

Additional resources are being added to this program to support student success in de-streamed Grade 9 programs. This program will be offered both in-person and through remote learning. Students must select their preference of learning model at the time of registration.

The following programs will be offered:

  • Language and Math reinforcement for students who may or may not have an Individual Education Plan (IEP)

  • English Language Learner (ELL) Language for students who are ELL Stage 1 or 2 learners. The focus is on reading, writing and speaking.

The program will operate from July 8 to July 26, 2024 (8:45 am - 3:25 pm).  A typical day has Language and Numeracy instruction in the morning with Arts-based programming in the afternoon. There are two 15 minute breaks and a 60-minute lunch break during the day.  Students will need to bring a lunch, snacks and plenty to drink each day.

Remote classes will be a mix of synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous learning.  A majority of the day will be spent in synchronous learning experiences (google meets with whole class or small groups, phone or video chats, individual conferencing) with asynchronous blocks of time (meeting with small groups or individuals, independent work time).  Students who select the remote program will receive an email, in July, with instructions on how to log on and participate in the class prior to the first day of class.

In-person locations include Bur Oak SS, Dr. Denison SS, Richmond Hill HS, Tommy Douglas SS and Unionville HS. Students will attend the school that is closest to their residential area. Busing will be provided from a selected area school. Schools that are within the non-transportation zone (walk zone) will not have bus routes.

In June, the bus schedule/route information will be available under the "Summer School" tab on the website www.schoolbuscity.com. All schools are listed as Summer School - "the school name" - Gr 6/7/8. Check the website prior to the start of Summer School for up to date schedule/route information. You do not have to register your student with the bus company; just ensure that they are at the bus loading area of the school several minutes prior to the listed departure time.

Register early to avoid disappointment. Decisions to run courses are based on sufficient enrolment and teacher availability.

International Students:  After the program starts, international students will be asked to pay a $225 fee electronically.
