About Homestay
International students at the York Region District School Board (YRDSB) have many opportunities to immerse themselves in Canadian society while studying in our schools. A safe and supportive living environment is an important part of a successful international student experience.
Incoming YRDSB secondary students and their families are responsible for selecting appropriate living accommodations for the duration of the study period. Secondary students in the International Student Program must either:
- Live with a parent, relative or family friend, over the age of 25, on a full time-basis
- Select the approved homestay provider
For students who require homestay accommodations while studying with YRDSB, students may apply through Canada Homestay Network (CHN), the pre-qualified and authorized homestay provider for the YRDSB International Student Program.
Canada Homestay Network also offers custodianship services to students in their homestay program.
Please note: JK & SK students must live with a parent. Grades 1 to 8 students must live with a parent or a relative, as approved by International Education Services. Homestay arrangements are not permitted for elementary students. Please refer to the Terms and Conditions of Participation for complete living accommodation requirements.

The homestay provider operates independently from the YRDSB and manages all aspects of homestay placements, including host family screening and student–host family matching.
